Office software — word processing, spreadsheet and database management, and presentation software export formats are:    

  • Office —  docx, xlsx, pptx, odt, rtf      
  • Imaging —   Photoshop = psd, Gimp = xcf , along with the generic formats such as  gif, jpg, png, tiff   
  • Desktop Publishing —  Indesign format is indd,  while Scribus is  sla and the  usual export formats include — pdf

 

MEDIA SOFTWARE

This  list of software, formats, terms and technologies is meant to give you highlights. It is not comprehensive, but it may help you fill in some of the gaps in what you know about media software.

  • Microsoft Word (and Excel – spreadsheets, Access – databases )
  • Scrivener — Aprox.  $40 / lots of flexibility, and far superior to MS Word. Highly recommended for professional writers. One month free trial version available.
  • Celtx — Free, add-ons for sale, not as versatile as Scribner but slightly better for film scripts.
  • Open Office — Functions much like MS Office but available for free.
  • Campfire Pro — Approx. $50 / Writing and scaffolding software with visual and map cues. Ten day free trial.
  • Collaborative platforms – Google Docs,  Hackpad , Etherpad and PrimaryPad

  • Adobe Photoshop is the standard. It is essential for pre-press work for print publication (esp. color profile matching), but it is expensive.  Other imaging applications  for photo touch-up and web publication work just as well.
  • Gimp (image editor, free,  same basic processing as Photoshop)
  • Google NIK photo editor (free)
  • PhotoSphere iPhone (creates Panoramic 360 degree images)
