If you are trying to create print or interactive web publications, you should be using InDesign or an equivalent graphics application. Usually we don’t use Microsoft word for this.
Microsoft word allows for some alignment of text, text boxes and images, as in the Dorothea Lange poster. However, details of juxtapositions get lost with the lack of control.
Adobe InDesign is the industry standard graphics assembly program for publication layouts of all kinds. It has strong controls over exact placement details. Adobe has an excellent step by step tutorial for creating publications that is located here. RU students can use the RU Virtual Computer lab for most applications, but not InDesign, unfortunately.
Viva Designer is a graphics application like InDesign. It can be downloaded for a free one month trial period. More Adobe InDesign alternatives are described here.
