This Day in History: 1945-05-13

 Yevgeny Khaldei’s photo of the Russian flag rising over the German Reichstag  is first published on this day in 1945. The iconic image is actually a re-enactment of an earlier flag-raising that took place late in the evening of April 30, 1945 while the Reichstag was still defended by German troops. The surrender of the Reichstag came on 2 May 1945, and only after that did Khaldei scale the building.
