This Day in History: 1951-03-29
Nick Ut, the Associated Press photographer whose “terror of war” photo won a 1973 Pulitzer Prize, is born in Vietnam on this day in 1951. He began working for the AP Saigon bureau in 1966, and continued with AP in Los Angeles until his retirement in 2017. The photo (also called “napalm girl”) depicted children running away from a napalm bombing attack on June 8, 1972 during the Vietnam War. It became one of the most famous images from the war as a depiction of the terror of war on the innocent. In recent years the authorship of the photo has been challenged, but the AP stands by Nick Ut.
