This Day in History: 1954-01-20

National Negro Network, the first radio broadcasting network owned by African Americans, is founded this day in 1954 by advertising executive W. Leonard Evans, Jr.   The network included 45 radio station affiliates and reached 12 to 15 million people.  Programs included soap operas and musical performances by major stars such as Ruby Dee, Cab Calloway and Ethel Waters.
