This Day in History: 1818-05-27
Amelia Bloomer, editor of the first newspaper for women, is born on this day in 1818. She is an important figure both in the world of feminism and journalism. As the editor The Lily, Bloomer believed that writing was the best way for women to express their voices to the public. Because of this belief, Bloomer distributed The Lily among members of the Seneca Falls Ladies Temperance Society. While writing for The Lily, Bloomer soon became an advocate in dress reform for women, often giving ideas on what type of fashion women could wear. One of Bloomer’s most famous fashion creations, was the “Bloomer costume” a knee-length dress with pants, which she mentioned and illustrated while writing for The Lily. Even after moving to Mount Vernon, Ohio, Bloomer still remained as an active editor for The Lily, and a strong social advocate for women’s rights and fashion until the end of her days.
