At some point you may be required to make a free portfolio page for your writing, photography and video projects.
There are lots of ways to do it, but one easy way is to get a free site from WordPress.com. There are other ways to use WordPress ( a free content management system available through WordPress.org ) but for now this is the best way to get familiar with the basic functions.
- Point your browser at wordpress.com and click on the middle button “Create Website”
- Click through on the second page where it says “Get Started“
- Next, create an account.
- Select a name that will end up as part of the URL of the site.
- So you might have “mynamehere.wordpress.com”
- If the name is already used, it will ask you to select another one
- Confirm your email: Once you have a site name, WordPress.com will send an email to your main account to confirm your address. Reply to the email and your account is ready and you can start building your page.
- ALL THIS IS FREE. You dont have to pay any money or fall for any of their come-ons. If you get to a place where they are asking for credit card information, you’ve gone down the wrong path.
- Eventually you may want to buy some of their services or start in on your own hosting platform, but not when you are starting off.
- Start building your portfolio.
- Select a Theme (or search for a new free theme and install it)
- Write a main title and subtitle
- Create a theme header of your own (often 820 pixels wide by 90 pixels high)
- The procedure for this using photoshop is to keep the information panel open so you get the exact right fit.
- Create pages, which are permanent pieces of writing linked from the menu
- Create posts, which are temporary pieces of writing that stack up over time
- Email the exact URL to your instructor so it can become part of a class page
