Drone video

In order to fly drones professionally, journalists and videographers need an FAA license.  It’s not too difficult and it’s free (now) to apply for one. Here is more information from the FAA for the  Section 107 drone license.

Use of drones in journalism was pioneered at the University of Nebraska Drone Journalism Lab.     but is now fairly standard.

Study materials available online:

Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (PDF), the Remote Pilot Study Guide (PDF), and the online sample questions (PDF) before taking the Knowledge Test.

Drone flying is legally restricted, and charges can result from irresponsible drone use and for interfering with police and emergency services.

Drones are used to deliver Girl Scout cookies in Christiansburg and by journalists to survey damage from mining in Appalachia (video below).
