Here we will use the red-eye, healing brush and clone repair tools to fix problems with these photos:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fix Adobe balloon lady&#8217;s red eye (Ex 2.7a, right);<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s2\">Repair the scratches on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/resource\/cph.3g02439\/\">Abraham Lincoln&#8217;s photo<\/a> (Ex 2.7b) and crop out archival artifacts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s2\">Repair the photo of the two sisters below (Ex 2.7c)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>For an extra credit challenge,<\/strong> fix the Dolly Madison photo below\u00a0 (Ex 2.7d).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Photoshop Repairs<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.photoshopessentials.com\/basics\/photoshop-tools-toolbar-overview\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-436\" src=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/PS.toolbar2-49x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"50\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/PS.toolbar2-49x300.jpg 49w, https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/PS.toolbar2-167x1024.jpg 167w, https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/PS.toolbar2.jpg 237w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 50px) 100vw, 50px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Redeye<\/strong> &#8212; In the Photoshop toolbar ( #7 in the toolbar on this page)\u00a0 is the red-eye tool, which will turn red eyes \u00a0back into human-looking colors again. Just click and drag the tool around the eyes, then save as a jpg or png.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Healing tools:<\/strong>\u00a0 Also in Photoshop are \u00a0the paintbrush (#8) and other assorted tools like the pencil. \u00a0This only paints in one color, but you can hold down the option key and sample color, then release the option key &#8212; process that can speed up repairs.<\/p>\n<p>The tools in #7 include &#8220;Spot healing brush&#8221; \u00a0which looks like a bandage. It averages all of the pixels inside the brush area and easily\u00a0covers over thin scratches or small \u00a0spots.<\/p>\n<p>Other tools include the &#8220;healing brush&#8221; which samples the color from one area and applies it to another. Hold down the option key and click to set the source, then move the mouse to the destination where repairs are needed.<\/p>\n<p>If you need a tool that completely replaces all elements (not just color), use the the Clone \/ stamp tool \u00a0(#9)<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>GIMP repairs<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_2443\" style=\"width: 187px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikibooks.org\/wiki\/GIMP\/Toolbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2443\" class=\"wp-image-2443 \" src=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/GimpTools-213x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"177\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/GimpTools-213x300.png 213w, https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/GimpTools-567x800.png 567w, https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/GimpTools.png 678w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 177px) 100vw, 177px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2443\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click through for detailed description of the toolbox.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Redeye<\/strong> &#8211; Gimp&#8217;s red eye removal tool is in the top menu command Filters \/ Enhance \/ Red Eye Removal. Select the eyes using the select tool (otherwise you&#8217;ll change the red balloon) and then use the red eye tool. Notice that it has a &#8220;threshold&#8221; command so that you get all of the red.\u00a0 (Another way to do this is to\u00a0 \u00a0open the &#8220;Channels&#8221; layer, turn off the blue and green color channels, and then use the dodge and burn tools on the red layer. Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gimp.org\/tutorials\/Red_Eye_Removal\/\">handy tutorial<\/a> on the technique.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Healing tools:\u00a0<\/strong> The bandage\u00a0 tool is a big help, but unlike Photoshop, it&#8217;s a two-step too. We set the source area by holding down the cmd or alt key, clicking once with your mouse, releasing the key, and the holding down the mouse to paint with the source area.<\/p>\n<p>Also useful: the clone stamp tool. Your job: \u00a0Use the spot healing brush, clone stamp tool and other tools to repair the problems. While you&#8217;re at it, use &#8220;unsharp mask&#8221; and sharpen to improve the focus. Her husband, James Madison, was president from 1809 to 1817.\u00a0 \u00a0The photo was badly scratched, so it needs healing brush tools.
