They appear to be in motion\u00a0 when the series of\u00a0 frames is played back.<\/p>\n<p>The usual frame rate for animation is 12 frames per second, which was doubled for the old US cinema standard of 24 fps. &#8220;Doubling&#8221; was just a way to ensure a 24 fps speed in the old analog film system, which had no speed controls. These days animation applications can give each frame its own speed.<\/p>\n<p>Stop motion animation was used in the original animated shorts and pilot episodes of South Park using construction paper and traditional stop motion cutout animation techniques.\u00a0 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CDlHXp4ieaA\">See this video<\/a>).\u00a0 \u00a0Subsequent episodes have been produced in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/maya\/overview?term=1-YEAR&amp;tab=subscription&amp;plc=MAYA\">Maya<\/a>, a powerful and expensive 3D animation program.<\/p>\n<p>Claymation productions like Wallace and Gromit use the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shaunthesheep.com\/news\/2021\/download-the-new-aardman-animator-app\/\">Aardman Animator<\/a> <\/strong>, an app developed by their studio and available free. <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IiSz6lMTiy4?si=_zp09S8SmGstBXxS\" width=\"480\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" align=\"right\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"\" inline-block=\"\" width:=\"\" 0px=\"\" overflow:=\"\" hidden=\"\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span>\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dragonframe<\/strong>\u00a0<a title=\"Stop motion animation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stop_motion_animation\">stop motion animation<\/a> software is relatively inexpensive and\u00a0 \u00a0has been used to make a number of full-length motion videos, including Disney&#8217;s <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frankenweenie_(2012_film)\">Frankenweenie<\/a>\u00a0and Laika&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Coraline (film)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coraline_(film)\">Coraline<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"The Boxtrolls\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Boxtrolls\">The Boxtrolls,<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ParaNorman\">ParaNorman. <\/a>\u00a0and <a title=\"Shaun the Sheep\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shaun_the_Sheep\">Shaun the Sheep<\/a>. It has also been used to shoot stop motion scenes in live action movies, including the holochess scene in\u00a0<a title=\"Star Wars: The Force Awakens\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Star_Wars:_The_Force_Awakens\">Star Wars: The Force Awakens <\/a>and numerous stop motion shorts.\u00a0 The control pad simplifies the animating process, as can be seen in some of the videos on this page.<\/p>\n<p>Dragonframe software was originally created for the award-winning stop-motion &#8220;Dragon&#8221; commercial for United Airlines by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jamie_Caliri\">Jamie Caliri.<\/a>\u00a0 It premiered during SuperBowl XL (2006). He created a number of other short animated films, including &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dragonframe.com\/blog\/the-sun-and-the-seed\/\">The Sun and the Seed,<\/a>&#8221; a film made for a friend and mentor who was suffering from lung cancer. The film was shown at a benefit to help with his hospital costs. <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C_aTK59REgs?si=TNSpSKqTZW0fXdjs\" width=\"480\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" align=\"right\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>YouTube has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCN49oXye0qomnm_GtopkD0g\">Dragonframe channel here\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>More free animation software<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/opentoonz.github.io\/e\/\">OpenToonz<\/a> <\/strong>&#8212; Free, developed by Digital Video S.p.A. in Italy, OpenToonz has been customized by Studio Ghibli, and used for the creation of its works for many years.
