Export as a pdf.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First, review <a href=\"https:\/\/studentpress.org\/wp-content\/harrower\/storydesign\/\">Story Design<\/a>,<\/strong> an excellent introduction to news design and layout by Tim Harrower.<\/p>\n<p>Harrower doesn&#8217;t explain exactly how you create and move these elements around, so we&#8217;ll do that using Adobe Indesign and some resources available below.<\/p>\n<p>A video explaining this assignment was <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NLczKG1lZX0\">uploaded to YouTube<\/a>\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NLczKG1lZX0?si=gI90DRGl5UKXop1s\" width=\"480\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" align=\"right\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nOpen Adobe InDesign<\/strong> and select the &#8220;New&#8221; button.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #444444;\">Let&#8217;s start with a Tabloid &#8211; 66 x 102 picas.\u00a0 (11 x 17 inches).\u00a0 Select &#8220;Tabloid&#8221; and &#8220;create.&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Note the standard measurements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A pica is one sixth of an inch, and is the usual space between columns of text, which is called a &#8220;gutter.&#8221;\u00a0 So 6 Picas = 72 points = 1 Inch<\/li>\n<li>Points are usually used for headline sizes.\u00a0 72 points or 12 Points = 1 inch.\u00a0 \u00a0<span style=\"color: #444444;\">Points are used mostly in increments of 6, as in 12 pt, 18 pt, 24 pt, 30 pt, 36 pt. 42 pt, 48 pt, 60 pt and 72 pt.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-2023-10-23-at-10.32.25-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3616\" src=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-2023-10-23-at-10.32.25-AM-300x241.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-2023-10-23-at-10.32.25-AM-300x241.png 300w, https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-2023-10-23-at-10.32.25-AM-768x617.png 768w, https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-2023-10-23-at-10.32.25-AM-800x643.png 800w, https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-2023-10-23-at-10.32.25-AM.png 1010w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the top menu, under &#8220;Layout,&#8221; open &#8220;Margins and Columns&#8221;.<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ll see a Margins and Columns dialogue box.<br \/>\nYour margins should be set at\u00a0 0.5 inches all around.\u00a0 Your column gutters should be 0.1667 inches, or one pica.<br \/>\nYou can also specify how many columns you want on the page. For now, let&#8217;s choose two columns. And that&#8217;s the only thing you need to change (for now) in margins and columns.<\/p>\n<p>Now there are three basic things you can do on this page, and they usually happen in this order:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Place&#8221; art or photos\u00a0 (File \/ Place)<\/li>\n<li>Write headlines in text boxes\u00a0 (Toolbox, Type Tool).<\/li>\n<li>Import body text (File \/ Place) or create dummy text (Type \/ Fill with placeholder text).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_3829\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-15-at-10.18.37-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3829\" class=\"wp-image-3829 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-15-at-10.18.37-AM-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3829\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Character pallet<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Before we get to work, check your top level menu &#8220;Window&#8221; and then follow &#8220;Workspace&#8221; and release on &#8220;Printing and Proofing.&#8221;\u00a0 This just ensures that we will be using the same menus in this exercise.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll also need the Character and Paragraph pallets. Find them under the top menu\u00a0 Window \/ Type and tables \/ Character (or Paragraph).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s how to start laying out a page:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Place photos<\/strong> &#8212; We&#8217;ve picked two basketball photos from <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?search=basketball+women&amp;title=Special:MediaSearch&amp;go=Go&amp;type=image\">Wikimedia Commons<\/a> for this demo. We are &#8220;placing&#8221; them. (We have already opened an InDesign file).\u00a0 Second, note that in the design, the direction of the photos is facing inward, towards the center of the composition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>2. Moving the photos:<\/strong><br \/>\nYou can move the photos on the page using the top Selection Tool (black arrow) so long as you click on the edges of the photo or the frame.\u00a0 You can move the photo inside the bounding box with the direct selection tool (white arrow).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>3. Resizing the photos:\u00a0<\/strong> At the top of the working space, just under the main menu, there is an Application Panel that changes with the tools you use.\u00a0 (Photoshop has a similar options bar at the top).\u00a0 From left to right you see the &#8220;Reference Point&#8221; the &#8220;x,y location,&#8221; the width and height commands, and the horizontal and vertical scale percentage with default values of &#8220;100 %&#8221;.\u00a0 \u00a0 Use this scale tool here, pulling down on the marker, and try the appropriate percentage to resize the photo. Pick the vertical<\/strong> of the\u00a0 Michigan player about to make a jump shot and move it to the right side (so it faces left).\u00a0 Size it to one and a half\u00a0 columns.\u00a0 <strong>\u00a0Then pick the horizontal<\/strong> of the players on the bench, and size that to one column below the vertical. Now write three headlines<\/strong> for the top, middle and bottom stories on the page.\u00a0 They should be larger at the top. Here we have 48 point,\u00a0 36 point, and 24 point top to bottom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">7<strong>. Click and drag the body text boxes<\/strong> into place, and then import from docx or txt formatted documents, or fill with placeholder text (under the main Type menu). Add other elements like\u00a0 bylines and cutlines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">You can also use the right-click mouse menu on the body text boxes to change from one to two columns.\u00a0 Select &#8220;Text Frame Options&#8221; and just change to 2 columns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>8. Create a &#8220;reverse&#8221;<\/strong> (white text on dark background) 45 degree ribbon on the left side.\u00a0 First make a text box and write your text inside. Then highlight the box with the Selection ( black arrow)\u00a0 tool. Go to the Application Panel at the top of the working space and select colors in &#8220;Fill&#8221; and &#8220;Stroke&#8221; (stroke is the line around the object).\u00a0 With the box still selected,\u00a0 place your cursor next to one of the small &#8220;handle boxes&#8221; on the text box and turn it 45 degrees.\u00a0 Now go back to the text tool, highlight your text, and change change the &#8220;Fill&#8221; in your text to white.\u00a0 Then drag the reverse ribbon into place. Add a\u00a0 Drop Cap<\/strong> by highlighting the text box and clicking on &#8220;drop cap&#8221; in the paragraph styles pallet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>10 Add a\u00a0 lift-out\u00a0 quote.<\/strong>\u00a0 Just create another text box, increase the text size to at least 16 points,\u00a0 and open the Text Wrap pallet.
