{"id":3322,"date":"2023-03-15T14:39:21","date_gmt":"2023-03-15T14:39:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/?page_id=3322"},"modified":"2026-03-19T15:56:38","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T15:56:38","slug":"flyer","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/flyer\/","title":{"rendered":"4.1 Create a simple flyer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Score: 20 points\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Goal:\u00a0 <\/strong>Create a simple single page flyer with a headline, a photo, a cutline, and two text columns.\u00a0 Export as png and also as a low-resolution pdf, then upload both png and pdf on your web page.\u00a0 Place the png on your web page and link it to your pdf.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u00a0Open InDesign<\/strong>, select New Document, select your page size (8.5 x 11.5 inches)\u00a0 and number of pages (1), select 1\/2 inch margins all around, and now name &amp; save this new file.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Layout:<\/strong><span style=\"color: #444444;\"><span style=\"color: #444444;\"><span style=\"color: #444444;\">\u00a0 At the top menu under Layout, pull down\u00a0 to &#8220;Margins &amp; Columns&#8221; and set the number of\u00a0 Columns to 2.\u00a0 This will give you column guides.\u00a0 \u00a0(Note that the gutter between columns can be changed.\u00a0 The default is usually 0.1667, which is one sixth of an inch,\u00a0 aka one &#8220;pica,&#8221; or\u00a0 1p0 )<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #444444;\"><strong>Workspace:\u00a0<\/strong> Go to the top menu, select Window \/ Workspace and select Digital Publishing. This arranges the workspace tools you need.\u00a0 (* For orientation, go to <a href=\"https:\/\/helpx.adobe.com\/indesign\/how-to\/get-started-indesign.html\">this Adobe page<\/a> and watch #3,\u00a0 about the Indesign workspace. *)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Place photo:<\/strong> \u00a0Under File, pull down to &#8220;Place&#8221; and select a photo (jpg, tiff, or png but not psd) \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0The photo will show up under your cursor. Just click and let it flow out onto the page.<br \/>\nNote: You can&#8217;t &#8220;open&#8221; a photo in Indesign. You have to import it or place it.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/teachingTempIndesign.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-608 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/teachingTempIndesign-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"166\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/teachingTempIndesign-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/teachingTempIndesign.jpg 612w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 166px) 100vw, 166px\" \/><\/a><strong>Adjust photo:<\/strong> To adjust the size of the photo, go to the Control bar bar at the top and look for the \u00a0width and height controls on the left side. It&#8217;s probably easiest to control the size through the percentage controls. For example, if your photo is\u00a0too big, try 50%. \u00a0 In the example here, we&#8217;ve let the photo run over from Column 2 into Column 1 for a better dynamic design.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Headline:<\/strong> Using the &#8220;T&#8221; text tool from the tool bar, click and drag a headline area from the left side to the right. Inside this text box, write a headline, such as &#8220;Video Demo Today.&#8221; \u00a0Increase the size using the Control panel text options, remembering of course that you have to keep your text selected (by clicking and dragging across the text). \u00a0You should also try to use an appropriate type face. In this case, we&#8217;ve selected &#8220;Impact&#8221;\u00a0regular 68 points.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Text:<\/strong> \u00a0Using the &#8220;T&#8221; text tool from the tool bar, click and drag a text box from the headline down to the bottom of the page. \u00a0With the box still highlighted, pull down \u00a0from the Type menu to &#8220;Fill with Placeholder Text.&#8221; \u00a0Some of this text will cover part of \u00a0the picture. \u00a0 Also, using the T text tool, create a box of placeholder text in Column 2 under the picture.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_611\" style=\"width: 82px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/textwrap.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-611\" class=\"wp-image-611\" src=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/textwrap.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"72\" height=\"58\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-611\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Text wrap buttons<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Text wrap:<\/strong> Now wrap the text around the picture. To do that, use the black arrow &#8220;select&#8221; tool and click on the picture to highlight it, then click on the Control area that has these \u00a0&#8220;text wrap&#8221; options. The one you want in this case is the circle inside the square.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Unify composition:<\/strong><span style=\"color: #444444;\"> Using the black arrow tool, click, drag and arrange the elements of your composition so they are unified. \u00a0Dont leave too much white space between the headline and the photo and the text, for example.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Save:<\/strong> Be sure to save your work as a .indd document<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Publish:\u00a0<\/strong> \u00a0Place a picture of your document on your web page, and link that picture to your pdf file.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Pdfs are very useful but they don&#8217;t show up on a web page. So to make them available, you can either link them from text or from a picture.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Export your pdf\u00a0 <\/strong>\u00a0Using the InDesign File \u00a0\/ Export command, export in pdf format and then\u00a0 upload to your portfolio media library just as you would a photo.\u00a0 Highlight and save the URL path to the pdf so that you can past that into the URL link after you edit the jpg or png.
