The first can only be opened in Audacity, the second, only <span style=\"color: #444444;\">in Audition.\u00a0 \u00a0(Other original formats include MS Word&#8217;s .docx, Excel&#8217;s .xlsx, Photoshop .psd, etc).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Uncompressed <\/strong>formats have the largest file sizes given equal lengths of recorded time. They include<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> .wav<\/span> formats for Windows PC and .<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">aiff<\/span> for MacOS.\u00a0 These days, Mac and PC platforms are\u00a0 able to handle both formats.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Compressed non-lossy audio formats<\/strong> are smaller size but have the same information. Formats include <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">WavPack<\/span> and\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">MPEG 4.<\/span> Typically these files are half the size of uncompressed formats like .wav.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Lossy audio formats <\/strong>are even smaller. Like .jpg image formats, lossy audio formats can &#8220;lose&#8221; some of the data by removing\u00a0 audio information.\u00a0 Lossy formats include<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> ACC\u00a0<\/span> (for iTunes, aka <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">m4a<\/span>) along with <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">MP3,<\/span> or MPEG Layer 3, the most common sound file format in use. (The Moving Picture Experts Group is a working group of the International Standards Organization).<\/p>\n<p>To repeat, you&#8217;ll probably work with these three formats most of the time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">WAV<\/span> &#8211; a non-lossy format, around 10 MB \/ minute, similar to the way you might use a non-lossy format like TIFF\u00a0 for digital images.\u00a0 NOT for podcasting or web browsers.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">MP3<\/span> &#8211; a lossy, compressible format that removes some data like JPG images. OK for podcasting.\n<ul>\n<li><em>Note from Wikipedia <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MP3\">audio formats pages<\/a>: The combination of small size and acceptable fidelity led to a boom in the distribution of music over the <a title=\"Internet\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet\">Internet<\/a>\u00a0in the late 1990s, with MP3 serving as an enabling technology at a time when\u00a0<a title=\"Bandwidth (computing)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bandwidth_(computing)\">bandwidth<\/a>\u00a0and storage were still at a premium. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The MP3 format soon became associated with controversies surrounding\u00a0<a title=\"Copyright infringement\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copyright_infringement\">copyright infringement<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Music piracy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Music_piracy\">music piracy<\/a>, and the file\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<a title=\"File sharing\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File_sharing\">sharing<\/a>\u00a0services\u00a0<a title=\"MP3.com\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MP3.com#Original_version\">MP3.com<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Napster\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Napster\">Napster<\/a>, among others. With the advent of\u00a0<a title=\"Portable media player\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portable_media_player\">portable media players<\/a>\u00a0(including &#8220;MP3 players&#8221;), a product category also including\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Smartphones\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smartphones\">smartphones<\/a>, MP3 support became near-universal and it remains a\u00a0<a title=\"De facto standard\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/De_facto_standard\">de facto\u00a0standard<\/a>\u00a0for digital audio despite the creation of newer coding formats such as\u00a0<a title=\"Advanced Audio Coding\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Advanced_Audio_Coding\">AAC<\/a>.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">AAC (or M4a)<\/span> &#8211; also a lossy, compressible format with better quality for the same bit rate as MP3.\u00a0 This is the best format for podcasting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, 'Nimbus Sans L', sans-serif; font-weight: bold; letter-spacing: 0.025em; text-transform: uppercase; font-size: 16px;\">Why use Lossy Audio Formats?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"note\">\n<p>So why would we want a file in which information is lost?\u00a0 First, to reduce the size, and secondly, to use a format adapted to the internet.<\/p>\n<p>Size:\u00a0 File size used to be a major issue for online downloads and exchanges due to limited internet bandwidth.
