Goal: Create a book<\/strong> with chapters, pagination and a table of contents. This will involve “dummy” text rather than an actual book.<\/p>\n

There are several kinds of software<\/strong> to help you publish a book. All will help you with the pre-press process for a paperback or hardback book,\u00a0 or the production process for different kinds of e-books. And all will deliver a pdf for print or an e-pub format for an e-book.<\/p>\n

Microsoft Word<\/strong> has templates that allow book production, available here<\/a> and here<\/a> .<\/p>\n

Kindle Direct publishing<\/a> <\/strong>also has Kindle Create<\/a>, which helps produce not only e-books but also paperbacks.<\/p>\n

Indesign For books<\/h3>\n

InDesign start page<\/p><\/div>\n

However, for the full range of flexibility,\u00a0 most professionals prefer Adobe Indesign.\u00a0 In this Assignment 4.3b, we are going to create a simple multi-chapter book using InDesign.\u00a0 We’ll set up pages, then create a chapter, then create several more chapters, then import the chapters into the InDesign book form.\u00a0 Then we’ll create a table of\u00a0 contents and export the document as a pdf.<\/p>\n

  1. \u00a0Open InDesign<\/strong>, select File \/ New \/ Document\n

    1. Page w x h ( 8.5 x 11.5 inches or 6 x 9 )<\/li>\n
    2. Select number of pages (8), with facing pages<\/li>\n
    3. Select 1\/2 inch margins at top and bottom, but 1 inch inside and outside.<\/li>\n
    4. Check primary text frame also<\/li>\n
    5. Now name & save this new file.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
    6. Go to\u00a0 top menu, Window \/ Workspace<\/strong> and select \/ Book. This arranges the workspace tools you need.<\/li>\n

    8. Go to the regular (“child”) pages and plan your publication.\u00a0 Page 1 is the cover. Page 3 is the table of contents.\u00a0 The other pages will be for various chapters. Let’s say you have three chapters, with eight pages per chapter.<\/li>\n
    9. Chapter pages should start about 1\/3 of the way down the page.\u00a0 Then create a text box using dummy text (menu \/ Text \/ Fill with Placeholder text).<\/li>\n
    10. Chapter headings should have their own special paragraph style that can be \"\"<\/a>loaded into the Table of Contents. Use the Paragraph Style panel to create these.<\/li>\n
    11. (Optional : To enhance chapter headings, create a “Drop Cap”\u00a0 — Highlight the first letter,\u00a0 using the Windows \/ Type \/ Paragraph, and then in the upper right pallet menu, select “Drop Caps and Nested Styles” and\u00a0 get this secondary pallet.\u00a0 The drop cap effect is seen between the two pallets.)<\/li>\n
    12. Once you have completed one chapter, we’ll simply copy two or three more dummy chapters (just. for this exercise).\u00a0 Renumber them and keep them in the same folder.<\/li>\n
    13. \"\"<\/a>Now open File \/ New \/ Book.\u00a0 At the bottom of the Book panel there is a cross symbol that lets you add chapters. Click on the cross and then add your chapters to the Book.\u00a0 Notice that the page numbers are automatically adjusting (assuming you did step 3, above).<\/li>\n
    14. To create a Table of contents,\u00a0 use the Layout \/ Table of Contents command. You should get a text block on your cursor that you can click and drag to place on the page.\u00a0 The result should be all the chapter headings you created as paragraph styles in step 6 above along with the page numbers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Now just export this book to pdf and paste on your web page.<\/p>\n
