Digital media terminology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>&#8212;&#8212; WORLD WIDE WEB &#8212;&#8212;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>CMS<\/strong><span style=\"color: #444444;\"> &#8211; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Content_management_system\">Content management system<\/a><span style=\"color: #444444;\"> such as WordPress created by a combination of a<\/span><span style=\"color: #444444;\"> database application (usually mySql) and a programming language (usually php).\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>CMS applications include: WordPress, Drupal, ZenCart, Shopify, Joomla.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>LMS<\/strong> &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Learning_management_system\"> Learning management systems<\/a> such as Brightspace D2L (crufty),\u00a0 Blackboard (expensive), and the popular, open-source, free application\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/moodle.org\/\">Moodle<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>HTTP<\/strong> &#8211; Hyper Text Transfer Protocol &#8211; The first part of a link command in html.\u00a0 Usually today we use https&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>HTTPS<\/strong> &#8211; This is the secure version of HTTP, and its greatly preferred.\u00a0 Web hosting companies sell add-on certificates for secure sites.<br \/>\n(ex: https:\/\/www.revolutionsincommunication.com\/viscomm )<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>HTML<\/strong> &#8211; Hyper Text Markup Language &#8211; The system using carats\u00a0 &#8220;&lt;&#8221; and &#8220;&gt;&#8221; to set off commands for links, images, video references and text formatting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Top level domain<\/strong> &#8211; The last part of a URL (ex:\u00a0 edu or\u00a0 gov )<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>URL<\/strong> &#8211; Uniform Resource Locator (ex: www.radford.edu)\u00a0 Also called Domain Name. These are for sale through web hosts or other similar services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>World Wide Web<\/strong> &#8212; Invented and developed by Tim Berners Lee at CERN in Geneva around 1989 &#8211; 1992.\u00a0 A major application operating inside the larger &#8220;Internet&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0(developed in the 1960s &#8211; 80s) with standardized protocols for computer-to-computer communication through web and\/or internet servers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8212;&#8212; CMS \/ WORDPRESS &#8212;&#8212;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Dashboard<\/strong> &#8212;\u00a0 After logging in to a WordPress site, the dashboard is the place where all the commands are found.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Appearance \/ Themes<\/strong> &#8212; Every wordpress page is based around a theme. This site uses Coreline.\u00a0 You select them or search for new ones under Appearance \/ Themes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Warning:<\/strong><\/span> Do NOT pay for anything at this point. This should all be free.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Appearance \/ Customize<\/strong> &#8212; Here you&#8217;ll see a menu that lets you set up the basics of your site, including header image, tagline and menus.\u00a0 Be sure to switch your &#8220;homepage settings&#8221; to &#8220;your latest posts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Warning:<\/strong><\/span> Do NOT push the big blue button and &#8220;create a new menu.&#8221;\u00a0 You want to work with the existing main menu or Menu 1.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Post and pages<\/strong> &#8212; These are almost the same thing, but typically, posts are used for immediate short-term content, and pages are used for long term permanent content.\u00a0 Posts can stack on the front page.\u00a0 Both pages and posts can be organized through Appearance \/ Menus<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Media library<\/strong> &#8212; This is where you upload the images you want to display on a web site. You can use one uploaded image from your media library as many times as you like.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Plugins<\/strong> &#8212; When you buy hosting from major companies,\u00a0 you can add features like security or newsletter mailing systems.\u00a0 There are also LMS plugins.<\/p>\n<p><strong> \u2014\u2014\u2014 \u00a0IMAGING APPLICATIONS &#8212;&#8212;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Adobe Photoshop<\/strong> is the standard.
