The state plaintiffs alleged that FB and others designed their platforms to be addictive and that Facebook covered up harms to children.<\/p>\n<p>The original claim in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/08\/18\/technology\/meta-social-media-addiction-trial.html\">California v Meta was for $200 billion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit was preceded by other social media personal injury cases.\u00a0 For example, in March 2025, a California jury found that Meta\/FB and YouTube had harmed a young person by encouraging addictive behavior. The awards<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/25\/technology\/social-media-trial-verdict.html\"> in that case<\/a> totaled $6 million. Dozens more cases were waiting in the wings.<\/p>\n<p>FB and others have argued that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act protects them from lawsuits such as these, but courts have found that Section 230 protects against suits over third-party content but not FB&#8217;s own conduct or product design.\u00a0 It was FB&#8217;s own deceptive statements and collection of data on children that were the subject of the lawsuit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A landmark social media case\u00a0ended with an out of court settlement Aug. 26, 2026, with an agreement by Meta \/ Facebook to pay 47 states $17 billion.
