Until the Trump administration, partisan denial of press credentials was rare.\u00a0 With Trump as president, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donald_Trump%27s_conflict_with_the_media\">constant conflict with the press has become the norm<\/a>. In the Oct. 15, 2025 video to the right,\u00a0 journalists turn in their Pentagon press passes and walk away from the beat <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/10\/pentagon-reporters-press-freedom-trump-1236587676\/\">rather than agree to department of defense restrictions on news reporting.\u00a0<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Update:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/judge-sides-with-new-york-times-in-challenge-to-pentagon-policy-limiting-reporters-access\">A federal judge sided with journalists<\/a> in a case brought against the Pentagon on March 19.\u00a0 The immediate Department of Defense reaction was to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbaltv.com\/article\/pentagon-media-offices-closure-lawsuit-press-access\/70826241\"> close down the\u00a0 &#8220;correspondents corridor&#8221;<\/a> and move\u00a0 journalists to a distant annex where it will be even harder to report the news.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>News gathering:\u00a0 Photos and videos<\/strong> &#8212; Journalists and members of the public are free to ask questions and take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/know-your-rights\/photographers-what-do-if-you-are-stopped-or-detained-taking-photographs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">photos and videos of police and public officials at work.<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0Drone video is relatively new, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/paperwriter.com\/dronejournalism-org\">Professional Society of Drone Journalists<\/a> keeps track of ethical and regulatory issues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>News gathering: FOIA<\/strong> &#8212; Access to information \u00a0through federal and state <a href=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/law?page_id=60\">Freedom of Information Act<\/a> (FOIA) laws, and penalties for disclosing classified information;<\/li>\n<li><strong>News gathering: Sunshine Law\u00a0<\/strong> &#8212; Access to open, pre-announced public meetings through Sunshine Laws, aka Open Meeting Law, and questions about that access, for example, whether journalists should be confined to &#8216;press pens&#8217; or press pools when politicians hold public events.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Court coverage<\/strong> &#8212;<a href=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/law?page_id=43\"> Access to the courts, and criminal justice information, <\/a>on an ethical basis respecting both the First and Sixth Amendments;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Protecting sources from courts<\/strong> &#8212; Questions of privilege and protection of sources, especially involving state and federal <a href=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/law?page_id=65\">&#8220;shield laws&#8221; for journalists;<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Protecting newsrooms from police<\/strong> &#8212;\u00a0 Although not legal under the Privacy Protection Act, police have been issuing search warrants in newsrooms;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trespassing and undercover journalism<\/strong> &#8212; There are questions about whether journalists can be charged with trespassing after following demonstrators onto private land;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Identity<\/strong> &#8212; Questions about who is a journalist and whether there should be licensing laws and policies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Student journalists<\/strong> &#8212;
