Thomas &#8212; spent a week on the front lines in Richmond in late June 2020, where rioting continues nightly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Thomas&#8217; reporting is nothing less than a masterpiece of multimedia journalism.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bluevirginia.us\/2020\/06\/richmonds-unconstitutional-assault-on-democracy?fbclid=IwAR2sfYep5_oSlMH9l2DE8F4sxAKGU_Oak4FcUvXsUeKHZQQpXgjBlfHt_mM\"> In his Blue Virginia article<\/a>, Thomas shows us a set of videos taken on the scene in late June 2020, accompanied by explanations of their context.<\/p> \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>What he concludes is that we are witnessing \u00a0<em>&#8220;a horrific orgy of extralegal violence, arbitrary arrest, assault and battery on peaceful protesters, and official deceit to justify it, all recorded on video.&#8221; <\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\nMost harrowing are the screams in the background. \r\n<p><br>\r\n \r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"460\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mBknKDUIfR4\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" align=\"left\"  allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\r\n \r\n<hr><p><br><p>\r\n<p>\r\n<p> \r\n\r\n<p>Thomas also objects to the way these events are being covered in the news media and perceived at the governor&#8217;s office:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p>How did the\u00a0<em>Richmond Times-Dispatch<\/em>\u00a0summarize these events? \u201cA Dozen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.richmond.com\/news\/local\/a-dozen-arrested-early-tuesday-at-richmond-city-hall-protest\/article_3e864a9c-6f94-5ad8-ac96-2ebc046bc33c.html\">Arrested<\/a>\u00a0Early Tuesday at Richmond City Hall Protest.\u201d And Governor Northam, whose state mansion sits a couple blocks from here and whose police were mostly responsible for the police violence? \u201cMostly these demonstrations have been peaceful, but here in Richmond we continue to see nightly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbc12.com\/2020\/06\/24\/nights-protesters-richmond-say-theyre-not-going-anywhere\/\">conflicts<\/a>\u00a0between demonstrators and our police. After three weeks it is no longer clear what the goals are or a path to achieve them. Clearly Richmond needs a different path forward.
