{"id":94,"date":"2015-12-28T17:29:28","date_gmt":"2015-12-28T17:29:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism\/?page_id=94"},"modified":"2024-04-11T20:54:54","modified_gmt":"2024-04-11T20:54:54","slug":"sports","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism\/beats\/sports\/","title":{"rendered":"Sports journalism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u00a0Sports journalism<\/strong> is not only about covering the game &#8212; the advance, the story about who wins, and the follow-up.\u00a0 \u00a0It&#8217;s also about how the teams are doing, who the coaches are, \u00a0and what it&#8217;s like to be involved. \u00a0And it&#8217;s about the structure of the system, \u00a0such as whether women&#8217;s sports are treated equally and whether the use of state and student funds is appropriate.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;\">You&#8217;ll want to approach each assignment with a process before, during and after a game. Before, you&#8217;ll research the teams, find out about their record, their star players and their coaches.\u00a0 During the game, watch for dramatic moments that can help explain the outcome.\u00a0 Listen for great quotes. Follow the action and take notes on time of the best clips. After the game, look for instances of good sportsmanship and perhaps a determination to excel among players and coaches. Of course, look for things that are unusual or different as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sports is not only about fun and entertainment. There are business and educational institutions, and most of all, human stories, to encounter on the sports beat.<\/p>\n<p>One question for every interview helps bring out unknown elements in a story.\u00a0 Ask a player or coach: What are your goals, and what are your obstacles?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example of a true controversial sports story:\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Linda Randall says her daughter, Randi-Lyn, a student at Radford University in southwestern Virginia, is not a &#8220;die-hard&#8221; follower of the Highlanders sports teams.\u00a0 Even so, by the time Randi-Lyn graduates in 2012, her parents probably will have paid an average of nearly $1,000 a year in fees to the school&#8217;s athletics department. They just didn&#8217;t know it from the school&#8217;s billing statements or website.\u00a0 \u00a0(\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/usatoday30.usatoday.com\/sports\/college\/2010-09-21-student-fees-boost-college-sports_N.htm\">USA Today <\/a>\u00a0)\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But is this fair to RU? Does the university have high athletic fees compared to other schools? USA Today took the story further, compared all the athletic fees for the state, and then explained why large schools like Virginia Tech can have low fees and yet have stellar athletic programs.\u00a0 One way to find out more is to go to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apa.virginia.gov\/APA_Reports\/reports.aspx\">Virginia Auditor of Public Accounts <\/a>reports page and search for university reports.<\/p>\n<h3>The baseline is statistics<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Bball.Stats3_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2219 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Bball.Stats3_-243x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Bball.Stats3_-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Bball.Stats3_-828x1024.jpg 828w, https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Bball.Stats3_-768x949.jpg 768w, https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Bball.Stats3_-647x800.jpg 647w, https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Bball.Stats3_.jpg 1165w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a>Any news article starts with basic facts, and in sports, that means game and player statistics.\u00a0 To the right is a page of NCAA official stats for a college basketball game in February, 2024. These are usually issued frequently during a game.\u00a0 Both players and the overall game are tracked.\u00a0 \u00a0See if you can tell how many three point shots were made by each team. You may want to use this <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basketball_statistics\">basketball statistics guide<\/a> from Wikipedia.<\/p>\n<p>Experienced reporters will use the statistics to see who has done well, and who is falling behind an old record, and judge which players to interview accordingly.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">MORE SPORTS LINKS\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For nearly as long as sports have been televised, athletes have sought to stay in the spotlight by retiring into the broadcast booth&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/business_of_news\/sports-journalism-survival-foul-territory-mcafee-braun-mlb.php\">Columbia Journalism Review, March 28, 2024<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ceEKs4oLqEk&amp;list=PLNitcNsxwFxLCwOI0LtJieM9af4HffJug&amp;index=9\">SPJ video of Suzy Kolber,<\/a> <\/strong>ESPN Monday Night Countdown &#8211; Mar 28, 2023<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journaliststoolbox.org\/2023\/01\/03\/college_sports_and_recruiting\/\">College sports resources<\/a>, Journalists toolbox, links to coach salary database, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/the1a.org\/shows\/2019-12-11\/sports-journalism\">&#8220;Sticking to Sports&#8221;<\/a> &#8212; \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wamu.org\/show\/1a\/\">1-A,\u00a0 WAMU<\/a>&#8216;s <\/strong>current events program, had a great discussion on sports journalism on Dec. 11, 2019.\u00a0 Can sports journalism be limited to &#8220;just sports,&#8221; or is there a broader responsibility? Is there an ideal of objectivity, or is it better to openly admit your perspective?<\/p>\n<p>For example, when former president Trump went to the World Series in 2019,\u00a0 He was cheered by some, boo-ed very loudly by others. Fox broadcast network, which was airing the world series, decided not to broadcast it.
