Keeping up:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Read &#8220;Science News&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0 a weekly magazine published by the Society for Science &amp; the Public, available online or in magazine format through the library.\u00a0 Especially interesting are the environmental stories such as &#8220;Extreme weather linked to humans,&#8221; Jan. 20, 2018.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Subscribe<\/strong> to the Society of Environmental Journalists<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sej.org\/headlines\/list\"> headline service<\/a>\u00a0(available at no cost).\u00a0 \u00a0Join <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sej.org\">SEJ <\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0 ASA or other organizations at a low student rate if possible.\u00a0 Consider attending\u00a0conference events, such as\u00a0next year&#8217;s conference in October in Flynt Mich.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Optional: Read\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.environmentalhistory.org\">\u00a0Environmental History<\/a>, a blog about the history of the environment.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Learn<\/strong> about the <a href=\"http:\/\/environmentalhistory.org\/about\/classics-of-environmental-literature\/\">Classics of Environmental Literature<\/a>, from Pliny the Elder\u00a0 to John Holdren.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>B. Write a short memo describing how to look for information for a proposed local air or water quality story.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Read<\/strong> &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2014\/may\/01\/report-science-conference-wellcome-writing-prize\">How to report from a science conference<\/a>.&#8221; by The Guardian. We&#8217;ll use some of these ideas to (virtually) attend <a href=\"https:\/\/aaas.confex.com\/aaas\/2018\/meetingapp.cgi\/Home\/0\">the AAAS conference Feb. 15-19<\/a>.\u00a0 Write a short memo describing how you would cover the conference for Science News.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Read\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Environmental Terms\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism?page_id=36\">Environmental Measurement<\/a>s on this site.\u00a0 Help\u00a0 develop a quiz so that\u00a0\u00a0people can familiarize themselves with the terms and the basic math.<\/li>\n<li>Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fcomm.2017.00024\/full?&amp;utm_source=Email_to_authors_&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;utm_content=T1_11.5e1_author&amp;utm_campaign=Email_publication&amp;field&amp;journalName=Frontiers_in_Communication&amp;id=328772\">Science Journalism&#8217;s Unlikely Golden Age\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>C. Research assignments\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phmsa.dot.gov\/hazmat\/erg\/emergency-response-guidebook-erg\">DOT guidebook<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong> (available as a pdf or as a phone ap) to look up the\u00a0placard ID numbers for trucks or railroad \u00a0tankers you see.\u00a0 Then follow instructions to find spill handling guidelines and write a short memo about what you find.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Search<\/strong> for published research papers at RU and VT\u00a0 on environmental topics in the <a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.radford.edu\/az.php?a=w\">Web of Science database<\/a> (available through the library with student login).\u00a0 Use\u00a0&#8220;OO=Radford&#8221; or &#8220;OO=Virginia Tech&#8221; as search terms.\u00a0\u00a0Consider using\u00a0some of these\u00a0papers as starting points for an article on a significant topic.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Research<\/strong> your major topic using web searches, science databases (especially Web of Science) and public documents and write a short memo about your research results.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>D. Writing assignments\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Research and write a short article about a published research paper. Read the article, interview the scientist (via email is OK), then turn in an outline, a first draft, and a final draft.<\/li>\n<li>Research and write a medium length article about a historical or environmental justice issue.<\/li>\n<li>Research and write a long article about a major environmental issue in the region. Ongoing &#8212;\u00a0 5% &#8212; Keep up with the news and be prepared to discuss recent events\u00a0 in weekly meetings.<br \/>\nB.\u00a0Basic Reporting &#8212; 10% &#8212;\u00a0 Write the &#8220;10 leads&#8221; exercise and five short reaction memos from the reading<br \/>\nC. Research &#8212; 20% &#8212; Complete all assignments, but with greatest emphasis on C 3.<br \/>\nD.Write\u00a0 &#8212;\u00a0 60% &#8212; Write at least three items\u00a0as described in Section<br \/>\nE.\u00a0Additional information\u00a0 &#8212; 5% &#8212; Become familiar with the issues\u00a0and be prepared to discuss\u00a0them \u00a0in weekly meetings.<\/p>\n<h3>Policies<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Attendance policy:<\/strong>\u00a0Attendance is important. Systematic absences will affect your grades, both in terms of poor test performance and penalties imposed for unexcused absences.
