{"id":2091,"date":"2023-03-16T15:46:23","date_gmt":"2023-03-16T15:46:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism\/?page_id=2091"},"modified":"2023-03-20T19:38:42","modified_gmt":"2023-03-20T19:38:42","slug":"livestreaming","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism\/livestreaming\/","title":{"rendered":"Streaming"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"gmail_default\">\n<div id=\"attachment_2084\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Livestream1.SPJ_.Ap12.2022.PorterOwens.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2084\" class=\"wp-image-2084 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Livestream1.SPJ_.Ap12.2022.PorterOwens-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Livestream1.SPJ_.Ap12.2022.PorterOwens-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/revolutionsincommunication.com\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Livestream1.SPJ_.Ap12.2022.PorterOwens.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2084\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Logan Porter, left, and James Owens, right, of Radford University stream an April, 2022 SPJ regional conference.<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #444444;\">Any small newspaper, radio station, community library or local government organization can now, with a few thousand dollar\u00a0 investment, stream and record all kinds of events.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>This is part of the community media services (CMS) model that is one\u00a0 way to shore up revenue for local media.\u00a0 It has the potential to replace some\u00a0 advertising revenue lost to search engines and social media.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overview\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Streaming refers to any use of internet to deliver audio and video to many receivers.\u00a0 Some streaming applications are direct competitors for cable television audiences.<\/p>\n<p>Here we are interested in small public service organizations who use essentially the same software and similar platforms to deliver low-cost a\/v services.\u00a0 \u00a0Live and\/or pre-recorded streams are now possible at every level of audience size and complexity at a low cost.<\/p>\n<p>Streams can go out over platforms such as\u00a0 YouTube,\u00a0 <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Facebook Live\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Facebook_Live\">Facebook Live<\/a>,\u00a0 <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Periscope (app)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Periscope_(app)\">Periscope<\/a>,\u00a0 <a title=\"Kuaishou\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kuaishou\">Kuaishou<\/a>,\u00a0 <a title=\"DouYu\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DouYu\">Douyu<\/a>,\u00a0 <a title=\"Bilibili\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bilibili\">bilibili,<\/a>\u00a0 <a title=\"Twitch (service)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twitch_(service)\">Twitch,<\/a>\u00a0and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"17 (app)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/17_(app)\">17\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>sites like\u00a0 have become popular outlets for watching people play video games, such as in\u00a0<a title=\"Esports\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Esports\">esports<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Let's Play\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Let%27s_Play\">Let&#8217;s Play<\/a>-style gaming, or\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Speedrun\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Speedrun\">speedrunning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conferencing\u00a0 software\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you want small groups of people to participate, possibly use &#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/zoom.us\/\">Zoom<\/a> &#8212;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluejeans.com\/products\/meetings\/conference-calls\">Verizon Bluejeans<\/a> &#8212;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-teams\/free-video-conferencing\">Microsoft Teams<\/a> &#8212;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These small group sessions can be broadcast to larger groups &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example of a switched, mixed, live stream event\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s one experience from the April 12, 2022 Society of Professional Journalists Region II conference:<\/p>\n<p>Going into the SPJ conference, we already had a professional Zoom account, two laptops, several condenser microphones, lots of cameras with clean video, tripods and a large control monitor. We also had an overhead projector (supplied by the conference center).\u00a0 \u00a0We had to find auditorium speakers and a lot of cabling and cable cover strips (for safety).<\/p>\n<p>The only additional expense for our small video unit was an audio mixer ( we bought a Soundcraft Notepad 8fx $150) and a video switcher ( In the photo above, we are using a Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro for $495 .).
