Int’l Media research

In expanding the scope of this class and web site, Im asking students to participate an ongoing project to identify international media law issues and resources.

If you choose to write a paper that compares some aspect of US law to international law, what I hope is that your research will contribute to the growing knowledge of the points of friction and possibilities for harmonization in international media law.

So in the area of libel,  Ive started with this page: https://revolutionsincommunication.com/law/intl-libel/

Notice that there are summaries and links to articles and specific cases from various countries.

Suggested areas for additional comparative media law research:

  • The difference between hate speech laws in the US and Europe
  • A comparison of US and global advertising regulation
  • A comparison of US and global privacy regulation
  • A comparison of US and global copyright regulation, especially in the areas of moral rights of artists & musicians,  duration of copyright, and reciprocity of copyright law enforcement.
  • A comparison of US and global obscenity and indecency laws

So all of these are areas where students can write a paper and make some useful comparisons.
